Gunfight in Ballia Leaves Wanted Cattle-Trafficking Suspect Injured
A wanted cattle-trafficking suspect was injured in a police encounter in Ballia’s Sikandarpur area after attempting to flee a checkpoint. Officers recovered a motorcycle, a country-made pistol and cartridges, and the accused was hospitalized under custody as investigations continue.
According to officials, a patrol team deployed for routine vehicle inspection attempted to halt a motorcycle being driven by Brijesh, who has been on the run in connection with cattle-smuggling cases. Instead of complying with instructions to stop, he reportedly accelerated in an attempt to flee, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.
Police said the suspect fired or attempted to confront the team during the chase, leading to a retaliatory shot that struck him. Following the encounter, authorities recovered a motorcycle, a country-made firearm and live cartridges from the spot.
The injured suspect was taken into custody and immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment under police supervision. Further investigation is under way, and officials have stated that additional legal action will follow based on existing and newly recovered evidence.
The incident underscores the heightened police focus on cracking down on cattle-trafficking networks in eastern Uttar Pradesh and reflects the continuing challenges local forces face while apprehending long-absconding offenders.
